HIERARCHY OF TYPE

As part of our type anatomy workshops we looked at hierarchy of type and the layout and composition of type, in particular in this session - newspapers.

We counted all the instances of different fonts, e.g. Italic, bold, point size etc.

Here are the findings from our group:

Metro- 14
Guardian- 19
Independent- 31
Daily Mirror- 32
I- 22

We then cut up each instance of type and laid it out in a hierarchy, it could be in terms of legibility, point size, readability of text, importance of information etc.

This is my hierarchy of point size, with point size increasing the further you go down.

This is just the beginning of an investigation into type. As a task I have been set to apply the same principle to posters, magazine spreads and newspaper spreads. With 3 examples of each. 1 layout I really like, I I really don't and one I feel indifferent about.

In the end I'll have 9 hierarchies, which is the bare minimum hopefully this will be the start of an interesting and in depth ongoing investigation. Along with my investigations into colour and colour theory.
