Competition Brief: NAS x NYE x NYC

Brief:

Rolling Stone Magazine refers to him as ‘one of the most distinctive rap artists to emerge in the mid-'90s.‘ Brooklyn-born Nas put an emphasis on gritty, poetic storytelling. His dense, percussive mixes, which didn't preclude savvy pop moves, won him both commercial success and critical support. Well over ten full-length albums later, Nas continues to pump a breath of fresh air into the hip-hop community as his latest album, Life is Good, demonstrates. In celebration of his New Year’s Eve event at the iconic Radio City Music Hall, Nas is inviting aspiring designers to create a poster for the unforgettable evening. One winner will have 100 limited edition prints produced as the official poster of Nas’ New Year’s Eve show and will be sold as merchandise at the concert.

About Nas

Nas has released eight consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums since 1994, four of which topped the Billboard charts upon release and has sold over thirteen-million records in the United States alone. Nas is often listed, mentioned, and ranked as one of the greatest and most influential rappers in history. MTV ranked him at number 5 on their list of The Greatest MCs of All Time. His most recent album, Life is Good, is available for download now.

## My response

Been working on a competition brief for Nas, the rapper from Queensbridge, NY. Performing at Radio City Hall, New Years eve, New York city.

You can see more about what visuals I referenced on my Context blog here

The concept was to reference Nas' iconic album covers and recurring themes and apply my own style to the poster, this was great fun to design and I'm confident I'll win or at the least be in the final shortlist.

Deadline for this brief was December 7, 2012.

Unfortunately it's more of a popularity contest than a design competition, with a voting system so we'll see how it goes.

Winning posters will be printed and displayed around NYC and the venue, I tried to make the poster as cost-effective as I could, could potentially be two spot colours.

##Screenprint (February 2013)

A lot of my work is dying to be screen-printed and I've been guilty of not trying it to produce finished work, rather than during workshops. So I made this my first brief where I incorporate screen-printing

I made two screens, one for the blue layer and one for the red, A2 size.

Overall the colour coverage could have been brighter and my halftone screen got clogged up, the paint was too thick and I had done too many swipes with the squeegee to compensate for the liquidy colour. Overall some of them came out pretty well and the rustic, grungy feel that a dry screenprint gives is pretty cool too

Doing this has given me the confidence to use screen-printing more often within my work as I feel it's a medium I can really successfully experiment with
