VERBAL ACROBATICS: Concept crit

≈ V E R B A L   A C R O B A T I C S ≈

I think my 5 minute presentation went down much better than my rewritten brief, probably partly me having a clearer concept since I wrote the brief and also a pretty badly written brief. Which could do with rewriting.

My project is now called Verbal Acrobatics which I feel really sums up what I want to achieve with my visuals and how I want people to interact with the project, literally dancing in front of you, being able to listen to a song just by looking at visuals in an odd way.

Brief feedback:

  • Consider where resolution could be distributed
  • Background: maybe include something about lyrics/words used within the brief: be more specific as to what the brief is asking you to do (quite confusing)
  • in 'Background' last paragraph is more about the brief not background

Concept presentation feedback:
  • Very interactive
  • Not many people have vinyl players
  • Think media appropriate to audience and subject - cassette tapes on a CD?
  • Explained the brief very well
  • Good that you have some visual ideas already
  • Show a very clear understanding of what you want to do
  • Large range of deliverable outcomes
  • How will the sun-genres within hip-hop be distinguished?
  • Hip-hop is a broad genre, if you pick 6 artists, will they be from different styles?
  • Interactive website with music could mean people without vinyl players can enjoy...
  • Don't lose the vinyl though! People still use them
  • Too awesome to crit
  • Good idea
  • I like the name!

The printed side of the project will be to have a minimum of 2 hip-hop artist songs visualised through a poster/broadsheet in a typographic manner. So a minimum of 2 artists from the 80's and 2 artists from the 90's hip-hop, showing the breadth of different hip-hop styles. These posters will be enclosed inside a Verbal Acrobatics record sleeve. One sleeve for the 80s and one for the 90s with varying visual styles.

The viewer will interact with the package by enjoying the music, and viewing the poster, so they enjoy the poster more too by having the sounds in their mind while viewing it and almost 'feeling' the poster.

The digital side of the project will be for the same posters to be visualised through animation/gifs and sounds. Possibly having clickable elements which play sounds. With a splash page and a very playful, party atmosphere.

Distribution for the digital side (digitised posters and website) will be to distribute to hip-hop sites, and musical blogs. The printed side, as in the record sleeves could be distributed through independent record stores, and sold as compilations but with a fun and interactive design element. Art in the physical sense is a massive part of hip-hop culture, especially graffiti.
