Design for Print and Web: Rewritten brief

Rewritten brief to focus more on what I want out of the brief and what I need to consider moving forward. The original ISTD briefs are very open, and not in a good way. Sort of set myself a brief within the brief, with more focus towards my own goals within the brief.

Also the title of the brief is dreadful so I'll think of a different name for my project too which is more fitting.

## Brief Title
     78 rpm - mp3

## The Brief
Investigate the lyrics of at least two songs, selected from different decades of the 20th century. It's up to you whether they are different genres, artists, movements or even the same movement, or genre.
Extend the spirit and emotion of your chosen songs into a typographic 'tour de force'.
Look specifically into the hip-hop culture of the 80's and 90's and investigate iconic songwriting and lyricism and communicate this.

## Background
The invention of audio-recording in the 19th and 20th century developed mass-media entertainment, which led to explosion of creative songwriting which has stuck to this day. The evolution from 78rpm to mp3 of the modern days. Hip-hop culture is a movement and musical style which is still relatively new and still maybe has a stigma attached to it and maybe still isn't regarded as pop music, what actually is 'pop' music? Hip-hop culture has roots and foundations in an earlier musical style and so on.
Each decade of the 20th century has had iconic songwriters and music for a variety of genres. Investigate different songs from different decades, or timeframes to illustrate the difference in material, sound and message.

## Considerations
Well considered typography. Consider juxtaposition and translating messages and concepts in the most creative and simplest (face-value) solutions as possible.
Target audience.
Visual styles of different decades and movements.
Decibels and loudness of and within certain parts of each song. Atmosphere and mood of each song.
Look into and research what people regard as iconic hip-hop artists/songs/lyrics of the 70s/80s and 90s. Top 100's etc.
Investigate the unique lyricism of each artist you chose and consider how you will visualise this.
Possibly even compare hip-hop to early influences such as Jazz and Motown through visuals.

## Target Audience

Design students, undergraduates probably between the age of 18-25

Hip-hop fans, people who tend to visit specialist hip-hop sites, read magazines and blogs. Already have basic prior knowledge of the movements and artists I will investigate.

## Mandatory Requirements

In-depth investigation and blogging of research into hip-hop culture in terms of music and visual culture of the 80s and 90s.
Visual mock-ups.
Presentation
Primary and secondary research into iconic artists, songs and hip-hop lyricism of the 80s and 90s.

## Tone of Voice

Playful, party atmosphere.
Almost as if you can hear the sound and nod your head just by looking at the work.
Quite informal, focus on visuals to translate the message to fans of hip-hop, instead of wordy descriptions and introductions.

## Deliverables

Print solution, with considerations into distribution and range. Consider how audience will interact and consume the work, will they reach out for it or will they receive it?
Web solution, interactive and consistent with printed work.
Digitised version of posters, with interactive/animated elements.
Minimum of two posters, translated to web, with study into two different artists and times.

## Studio Deadline

30/01/12 - 2pm
