Design for Print & Web: 78RPM - MP3

Picked a brief for the next brief in the Design Production module today. Actually really excited to start, I feel it's interesting to me personally, but a great opportunity visually too and I think once the concept is nailed I can produce something pretty effective and unique for this brief.

## 5 ##

5 things I want to solve

  • Communicating sound and emotion through type.
  • Difference/similarities between decades of music
  • Difference/similarities between genres of music
  • Translating music to an interactive screen based solution
  • Finding two genres / decades I can compare and contrast in terms of vibe / lyrics / sound / message / roots
5 reasons why I want to solve
  • Personally interesting
  • Never done much pure typography, so it's an opportunity
  • Reasons to research and read about artist/genres/history and make research led conclusions
  • Creating an interactive solution sounds fun and new
  • Excuse to listen to and analyse good music
  • Creative opportunities print and web
5 facts about subject and content
  • Genres and decades of music
  • 20th century artists are the focus
  • Focus on songwriting and lyrics
  • Screen-based and print resolution minimum with presentation of solutions
  • Express the essence and spirit of chosen songs typographically
5 facts about audience
  • design students, visually aware specimens
  • undergraduates, 18-25?
  • Industry professionals, who will mark and study the work
  • Hip-hop fans, Americans who came up in the 80s and 90s
  • Music enthusiasts, probably mainly male, taking into account the music I'm going to focus on
  • Likely to have prior basic knowledge of the artist/decade/movement I will communicate
5 things I want to communicate
  • Fun
  • Sound
  • Motion
  • Lyrics as visuals and type
  • Difference/similarities between genres/artists/decades
  • Progression of music / roots of genres
  • Essence and spirit of music typographically
5 possible outcomes
  • Series of digital/interactive posters  - different but related artists of the late 20th century
  • Interactive website with timeline of decades music, with printed material translated to the timeline but with addition of sound and motion
  • Website with fun element, e.g. guess the lyrics, or decade. Or interactive posters ask you questions, you have to guess the artist.
  • Digital animated posters, with hotspots, once clicked areas light up and relevant sounds/bars of music play, in relevant visual style to genre/era
  • Publications, when opened plays the song, like how you can get greetings cards with sound.

5 ways I could distribute:

  • Creating an animated e-flyer/mailout I can send to relevant leading magazines and websites such as The Source
  • Pinterest/Behance/Twitter/Etc
  • Packing as a music cd or relevant object and distributing through music stores, to have a familiarity and interest factor
  • Send to prominent hip-hop sites/streetwear sites/blogs to try and be featured and have a spotlight on the project, through photography of the print and the website
  • Could be a monthly or bi-monthly editioned digitally animated and printed poster, with additions to the website which grows with the project

Moving forward I think the action plan is to research into 80s and 90s hip hop, the roots, prominent artists, their most popular songs and their method of delivery. Also very importantly, the visual style of the different decades and movements I'm going to focus on.

Watch a few documentaries on the art of hip- hop and it's roots and then start thinking visually, I think starting first with the posters, which I will incorporate interactivity and animation to afterwards.

Don't want to spend weeks researching with this brief, I feel my work will be stronger if it's more of a sort of 'reaction' while it's still fresh, rather than spending weeks being bogged down with material and making something which could potentially be nothing unique.
