Bushido!: Concept Proposal Crit: Feedback & Plan of Action

Had the concept crit today for my concept of 'SEVEN' for my Bushido What Is Good project, overall I feel it went really well and the feedback was positive and gave me a variety of new ideas - I can't wait to get started on this now. My only worry is having the amount of time to spend on this as I'd like to, so I'll need to plan my time effectively.

The idea of instead branding an exhibition seemed to go down really well and I'm excited to crack on with it and to the standard I can see in my head.

Presentation sheets

My initial concept I was going with..right until this morning was to package these informational and education products within a boxset but my issue with this was I didn't have a clear audience, I was assuming too much, for example I was assuming this product would be viable and realistic and imagining how this boxset would be distributed and promoted was difficult.

Also the idea of making a box which was durable, effective and to this scale was stressing me as packaging is not my strong point and I wasn't confident at all I'd pull it off at all, never mind to the standard I wanted it to be at - without a box the products are a bit lost.

SO

I was thinking about how the products can be viable without a box as the products are where  I can really go town, especially visually. I decided the products would be to brand and promote an exhibition

An exhibition called BUSHIDO! a celebration and history of the way of the warrior.

This allows the booklets and posters to act as promotional and products which can be bought and taken away from the exhibition. Calligraphy sets and notebooks can also be a product taken away from the exhibition.

Branding an exhibition also opens up possibilities in terms of proposals, web and app design to create much more context to the project as a big thing.

So the products I'm definitely going to work on now, are:

Promotional posters (7) - With a focus on one virtue each. e.g. HONOUR, LOYALTY etc. Almost viral and cryptic but with exhibition name, date and venue.

Booklets (7) - on a variety of topics and available at the exhibition store or to order individually or as a set from website

Calligraphy set (notebook/ink and pen) - Souvenir type product available at exhibition and also made to order.

Website - proposal and not coding based. Will be a home for the exhibition, directions, contents of exhibition, about, and online store. An interactive and experimental design

App - Basically a mobile version of the website, acts as a sort of digital museum. Has a neat feature you can install which gives you a Quote of The Day at a specified time you can choose to be daily/weekly/monthly etc.

Mail-outs and tickets - For customers who order tickets or any material from the online store

Outdoor proposals - Hanging building size posters, paste ups around London, wall murals

Visual Style

I'm now going to brand an exhibition aimed at a younger audience to engage with and attend an exhibition to learn more about Japanese and Far Easter history specifically in terms of the idea of a warrior throughout history, culture, media and art.

I will focus more on the branding and I will not propose the exhibition layout and organisation itself, it's almost as if the museum has asked me to brand the exhibition and not work on the exhibition as a space itself.

I'm going to have a much more loose visual style now, as it relates to me and my design aspirations and portfolio and also gives a more cutting edge visual style not associated with this topic of the Far East. I'm inspired by studios such as HORT who have worked with Nike and took a fairly generic topic such as Basketball and turned it on it's head and portrayed so much movement and character and an experimental quality to it.

I plan on taking notes from this towards the idea of the Samurai. Giving Samurai and Bushido imagery a contemporary and experimental twist, referencing the source material but creating cutting edge design which appeals to the idea of a modern exhibition and the demographic I'm targeting in London.

Can't wait!

PLAN OF ACTION - THIS WEEK

I'm going to crack on with the posters and just kind of design as I go and work loosely, I really enjoy working this way and feel my designs are strongest and most expressive in this way.

I'm going to work on the posters first as in other projects I'm also combining posters with publications and also weirdly enough on a similar theme of Japan too so I'll work on posters for this brief and publications for another module to give me some variety in workflow.

I'm going to think about variations of the logo as right now the logo I've got suits the previous concept more and I want it to be a little looser and more flexible so I might create a few variations. I'm going to work on some thumbnails for posters too so I can crack on with those over the weekend. I want around 2-3 posters done, or at least getting these.

Order of process
_Posters x 7
_Publications x 7
_Mail-outs x 1/2
_Website
_App
_Outdoor promotional proposals
