Art by Armando Seguso
30's posters are generally handdrawn, compositionally they have alot more abstract features. They're not always lifelike and photorealistic but still resemble what they need to. The lack of technology in those days and prominence of traditional methods of print possibly made them be more creative and experimental with the layout and composition. They all look very grand, the girls are always very womanly. These were the days when the girls were seen to be in the kitchen and weren't seen to do mens jobs. All the men look well off, usually smoke and dress smart.
They mostly look painted. Which obviously takes a great degree of skill and craft. Personal favourites of mine are Riffraff. I like how it has posters for different actors in the film. It uses space really well, posters in the 30s are very filled out and have little empty space, whereas Riffraff does and it stands out. Nowadays films promote by having seperate series of posters for different characters in the film so it's very ahead of it's time in this aspect.
