504 Studio Workshop - Stocks and finishing techniques

We've been looking at stocks and had a short but very useful lecture on 7 things to learn about print. It was interesting to see the differences in ink coverage on different stocks.

This is most likely a white stock, with black printed on to it and varnished on one side, or maybe laminated? Giving it a gloss finish and the colours look much more vivid than on the uncoated other side.

Silver ink on black stock.

Greg likes silver ink on black stock.

The above two photos are of the same flyer, one side is coated and you can see the differences in how the black ink looks. The coated black looks so much more pure black and the colours have come out really vivid.

Fold out outer covers for books, with a foiled hard back casing.

Glimpse of the amount of stocks GFSmith offer.

I really liked this. It's simply a one colour black print on a yellow newspaper stock and it works really well, in terms of graphic design and layout alone.

Debossed Pulp-Paper cover.

Colour registration embossing. Where it's inked with white/silver ink and debossed.

Spot varnish over black ink, adds a more tactile and 3d feel to something which is simply a one colour print on white stock.

Combination stamp! (I think that's what it's called?) A combination of foiling and a slight emboss.
