The Art Of Peace - Notes and Quotes

Recently read through The Art Of Peace by Morihei Ushiba and definitely gave me material and more knowledge in the area.

Although authors such as Sun Tszu with the "Art of War" accept the inevitably of war, Ueshiba instead focuses on applying martial arts towards peace.

I definitely want to cover Morihei Ushiba, I'm thinking about creating a series of booklets, one on case studies - legendary warriors and acts of "Bushido" - Ushiba is definitely in this book.

Some of these quotes will be made into posters, combining Japanese design conventions with my own take.

In terms of the layout and font choices, I feel a serif typeface will be perfect for my print and editorial stuff such as the booklets.

Quotes:

"The way of the warrior has been misunderstood as a means to kill and destroy others. Those who seek competition are making a grave mistake. To smash, injure, or destroy is the worst sin a human being can commit."

"The real way of a warrior is to prevent slaughter - it is the Art of Peace, the power of love."

"The Art Of Peace is medicine for a sick world. There is evil and disorder in the world because people have forgotten that all things emanate from one source. Return to that source and leave behind all self-centered thoughts, petty desires, and anger. Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything."

"When life is victorious, there is birth; when it is thwarted, there is death. A warrior is always engaged in a life-and-death struggle for Peace."

"As soon as you concern yourself with the "good" and "bad" of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competition with, and criticising others weaken and defeat you."

"Iron is full of impurities that weaken it; through forging, it becomes steel and is transformed into a razor-sharp sword. Human beings develop in the same fashion."

"To inure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace."

"When an opponent comes forward, move in and greets him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way."

"Do not look upon this world with fear and loathing. Bravely face whatever the gods offer."

"Failure is the key to success; Each mistake teaches us something."

"In the art of peace we never attack. An attack is proof that one is never out of control. Never run away from any kind of challenge, but do not try to suppress or control an opponent unnaturally. Let attackers come any way they like and then blend with them. Never chase after opponents. Redirect each attack and get firmly behind it."

"Cast off limiting thoughts and return to true emptiness. Stand in the midst of the Great Void. This is the secret of the Way of a Warrior."

"Ultimately, you must forget about technique. The further you progress, the fewer teachings there are. The Great Path is really No Path."

"When you bow deeply to the universe. It bows back; when you call out the name of God, it echoes inside you."

##Book

Really think the format and layout of the book from the inside is effective and inviting to read, it's a pocket size book so it's something you can easily carry around with you and read a few pages of and put away in your pocket at your leisure. The typeface used is a serif font, adds luxury and a kind of 'history' to the quotes inside, - a sans serif font just wouldn't work. I feel using a serif font, maybe not completely but at least predominantly throughout the editorial part of the product would be a good shout.

Next up is The Art Of War and possibly the Book of Five Rings if I can get hold of it! Reading books and trying to engage with the subject has been really valuable and I feel it really works and helps me be inspired and see life in a different perspective and this is kind of the aim of my project too. I hope to have all the content ready in time for the second stage where we actually do the project
