Recently received a brief from Hyde Park Picture House, a competition open to all students, to create a poster for their screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s SANTA SANGRE (1989)- as part of their Creatures of The Night series of screenings.
I actually won the competition and the artwork was used for all promotion and was sold by me at the screening, which was great for me and the first time I've done anything like this.
Brief:
We want you, the students of Leeds College of Art, to design a poster for our
special Halloween screening on October the 27th. There are no stipulations
for style or technique so you can take whatever approach you like - the only
thing we ask is that the poster must convey in some way the feel, tone and
spirit of the film, and of course it’s got to have all the relevant info about the
screening on too!
The Film:
Our Creatures Halloween special this year is Alejandro Jodorowsky’s
SANTA SANGRE (1989), a terrifying, psychedelic nightmare of a film from
the director of midnight movie mainstays EL TOPO and HOLY
MOUNTAIN. It’s a truly bonkers film with some stunning, evocative
imagery - the perfect source material for producing a really creative,
interesting work of poster art. You don’t have to have seen the film all the
way through, there are a wealth of clips, trailers and stills online to provide
inspiration for your work. You can also view all our previous Creatures
posters on Facebook, just search ‘Creatures of the Night’.
The poster must include the following details:
A Creatures of the Night Halloween Special - Santa Sangre - Saturday 27th October 2012 - 11PM - At The Hyde Park
Picture House - Tickets from £4.50 to £6.50 - 0113 275 2045 - www.hydeparkpicturehouse.co.uk
Deadline:
17:00 Monday 15th October 2012
The Prizes:
You will win - the respect and admiration of your peers, a 9-film pass to Creatures of the Night screenings, a free membership to the Friends of Hyde Park Picture House (worth £10) and perhaps most importantly of all, an extra piece for your portfolio and exposure for your work both online (via social media and our website) and IRL.

This competition is open to all Leeds College of Art Students, to enter simply send your design as a high resolution JPEG to
admin@hydeparkpicturehouse.co.uk with the subject line 'Creatures Poster Competition’ by 17:00 on Monday the 15th of October 2012.

Final Artwork
As the brief says I tried to capture the emotion and vibe of the movie. The movie itself is super trippy, eery and the colours are vivid and super bright. The story revolves around a woman who has her arms cut off and makes her son be 'her arms' and carry out many a dastardly deed.
I used red and green as that's never easy on the eyes and a major concept of the poster is it's horizontaly symmetrical, there's an even amount of information no matter which way up you read it, so the effect and information digested is the same. I'm really happy with how this turned out and these sold out at the screening too.
