DESIGN IS ABOUT DOING: THE POSTER BRIEF

New brief!

D E S I G N  I S  A B O U T  D O I N G :  T H E  P O S T E R  B R I E F

So we're required to make three A2 posters that communicate a quote by Erik Kessels.

"It always rains in your country. Make a poster for visitors to the UK explaining why so much rain is attractive. Don't be sarcastic. After all, rain can be romantic, useful or beautiful."

Background
In April this year, Erik Kessels will be giving a lecture in Manchester for the D&AD North series. This is an opportunity to design a poster for one of the leading figures in the creative industries and get your work seen by people representing the creative industry of the north.

Considerations
Erik will be judging the winner of the competition who will be rewarded with print of their poster, and the rare book 2Kilo of KesselsKramer and A New Kilo of KesselsKramer.

Being an idea-led thinker, Erik will be looking for the strength of an idea and conceptual merit.

Mandatory requirements
All designs should be supported by a broad range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and notebooks.

The final posters should be presented on an A2 portrait format.

Deliverables
Three resolved posters, printed.

Studio deadline

Friday 24th February 2012

Initial notes
  • Live briefs will be set on Friday, until then it will be treated as a studio brief
  • Don't have to be finished for Friday, the finals will be sent digitally but need to be finished and displayed on screen or on mock print for Friday
What is the problem?
Who is the audience?
What is the context?
What is the method of delivery?

Find out who Erik Kessels is, what kind of work does he product, what kind of work does he like?

Find out more about D&AD north series, what kind of work have won and what kind of work have students produced in the past?

What kind of colours should I use, what kind of colours do D&AD use?

Look into the idea of water, what does it symbolise. How can I present rain and water as something romantic, useful or beautiful in a quick and digestable way.

How eye-catching does it need to be, how many seconds on average do people look at posters?

I'll keep all these thoughts initially, and just start researching and see where it takes me. Deadline is Friday so I need to crack on and spend less time contemplating and more time doing.
