Design Principles: 3D Typography

Today we had quite an enjoyable design principles session. We had to create a letterform, but split it up into different planes, so when looking at it from a certain angle through a finder, all planes would align nicely to make the letterform. We first made it out of 3 planes and then 5, which proved a little more difficult.

The letterform we chose to base ours on was a lowercase b in Rockwell Bold.

I think evaluating our actual letterform, we could have been more adventurous with the size and scale of the planes, even hanging sections and emphasising how distance means a bigger size needed to create the illusion of all planes being the same size through the finder. We only had a little table though so we couldn't bring distance between each plane as much as we wanted. Here are some photos from the workshop.
