CRIT FEEDBACK (16/3/12) AND PLAN MOVING FORWARD

Just getting ideas down at this point

I've really not had the best of weeks for this brief at all. I've been quite indifferent with it, mainly because I've not spent nowhere near as much time as I normally would 1 week into a 2 week brief. It's mainly down to me concentrating more on my Design Principles and PPP modules this week. It's no excuse though, it's down to my own poor time management I guess. So the situation right now is I have next to no research, and very little visuals.

All I have at the moment is a variety of vague ideas for the stamps, what they'll say and how they'll look but I need to step back from this and do what I need to do first - research. I've got about a week to crack on with this, the time I spent on the other modules, will allow me to spend more time and spend less time on those this week.

I need to RESEARCH, get some visual cues, find out WHAT i want to say, and then figure out HOW i'm going to say.

Here is the feedback I got from others on the course:

FEEDBACK 1

Theme? Like the future idea - a space oddyssey. Retrospective futures. I reckon you should roll with that.

Make sense? Ideas do, so push imagery to see if that will work.

Imagery? Can't see much but I'm sure it will be sick.

Research? Look into similar existing retrospective future stuff.

^^ This was actually quite useful. One of my ideas was a sort of retrospective future. Where people thought we would be in the future, but where we actually are. Just how for example back in the 60s and 70s, they thought by the turn of the millenium, we'd all be in space! Illustrated by '2001: A Space Odyssey' which came out sometime in the 60's. For example back in the days they might have made stamps showing the world in 2012, a green, happy place. It could make people realise we need to change.

On the other side of the coin, I could make really scenic, sceneries, showing pollution, chimneys, chemical waste etc but in an ironic kind of way. You expect it to show little birds flying around etc but really what you're seeing if you look closely is the environment getting damaged. What you expected to be people smiling and pointing towards a little cottage, is actually people smiling and looking at a huge chimney polluting the sky. I'm sure shepard fairy did something quite similar to this, would be worth a reference at the least.

Right now my ideas are open and what I want to say can change too depending on what I find out and also finding out exactly what 'overconsumption' and things like that are. I'll spend a day researching, finding out what I want to say and then start thinking up visuals when I'm ready. I don't have time on my side so it's probably not best to think about visuals for a wide variety of things, and instead be more focused.

FEEDBACK 2

Is there a theme?
There is no clear theme at the moment. Maybe develop and define the olympics idea.

Is it virtually literate?
As there is no theme, not really. Design sheets look well thought out though.

^^The olympics idea mentioned is me thinking back to anniversary/special edition stamps which have been prevalent though stamps/currency for hundreds of years. The idea is to take advantage of the olympics being held in London this year. It's a massive coup for GB and the whole world's basically watching. There'll be a lot of initiatives and marketing ploys to make GB look good. So i'm thinking of having like 5 stamps, one for each ring in the logo. 5 different events, each event would somehow promote a greener environment, e.g. the team gb, cycling team supporting cycling more. The runners supporting running more. I could think of 3 more ways to linking sports with being more environmentally friendly. At the same time creating a sense of unity and making GB look good and inviting to the rest of the world, and also at the same time creating excitement and unity in GB in preparation for the Olympics.

FEEDBACK 3

GO ON TO SELECT A THEME: Possibly the future retrospective theme. Creating a modern aesthetic that will appeal to the younger generation.

IDEA:    Confused slightly with some ideas however when visuals are produced this would possibly clarify.

^^ Again, the mention of the future retrospective idea. I don't want to get too carried away with an idea just yet and as special attention needs to be paid to the audience/purpose etc I think it'll be a better idea to just research and find out interesting things and see where my own voice and opinion stands in all this.
