Analysing BBC Online

We're trying to have quite a clear logical approach to this BBC brief and want to remain focussed in order to not get sidetracked and also make our proposal easy to present - straight to the point. One of the ways we analysed BBC was to outline the problems and a possible solution to those problems.

BBC - Problems?

Uninvolved
-Unimportant user profiles
-Not a very social experience
-Lack of social connection
-Sharing and commenting is unclear and unimportant
-News is generic for everyone

Lack of life
-No movement
-Less emphasis on video
-Static
-No newsreel or 'live' feel

No consistency in design, colour and layout
-Inconsistent
-Can tell some sections of the site are newer than others
-Confusing to use in terms of navigation on different sites
-Confusing to the eye
-Possibly too many click-thru's and backtracking

No substantial BBC App
-Poor apps, for example BBC News
-Uninspiring & uninviting
-The apps that do exist often look dated, especially BBC News
-Apps are often better than the website counterpart nowadays, for example IMDB app> IMDB

Lack of interactivity
-Static
-No movement
-Overload of information?
-No tailored news like Netflix with movies
-You can't move articles around and interact with the site
-Uninspired and long layouts/pages, people don't like scrolling too much

BBC - Solutions?

A live panel
-Constantly updates in real-time, live
-Movement, videos, pics, breaking news
-Grid like sensibilities
-Purely digital design aesthetic, not skeumorphic like Apple.

Newsfeed
-A newsfeed for registered users
-Ability to share and favourite articles to share to friends also on BBC, subscribers or read later
-Custom user profile and sense of belonging

User profiles
-Tailor news articles towards you
-Tailored newsfeed of what interests you, for example you may like football but not cricket, so you can disable cricket from your live feed and hierarchy of information
-Connect to Facebook and Twitter, increases social presence and traffic
-Importance of share feature
-Users can send in photos and they feature on other users newsfeeds and also sometimes news articles, for example sharing the snow to your mates on your newsfeed
-Users photo's make up the background on the weather page.

Considered layout
-Apply print sensibilities to web design
-Rule of thirds
-Fibonacci sequence applied to web design
-Grid like aesthetic
-Individual panels which move with finger or scroll input, less scrolling and individual panel scrolling
-Applying app aesthetic to web design, a more full screen and well laid out experience
-Taking cues from mobile UI design and displaying useful information such as the date/time/weather clearly.

Importance to apps
-Combining a more full-screen experience with web design
-Interactivity
-Synthesis between desktop/tablet/mobile versions
-Tablets on the increase, a more touch based web experience, websites need to cater for this

Purely digital
-Less gradients and dated design
-Purely digital, flat colours and animation
-Grid like layout, emphasis on colours and size of individual elements for information hierarchy
-Incorporation of animated gifs to give articles life and what would normally be static images in articles, life
-Ability to drag around news story thumbnails to favourite/share to friends
-transition animations
-news stories pop up to be read in an overlay screen mode and not be taken to a new separate page, similar to the 'reader' function in Safari, but obviously way better
-Use of icons

Movement/life
-Impression you're looking through a window display of TV's
-Constant life and movement
-Inviting, the world is always moving
-Live feed houses completely live and tailored content - videos, articles, breaking news, photos
-Videos play on their own in live-feed, possibly dimmed until rollover plays sound for full experience. Just like turning over a channel on TV
-Using animated .gif's to replace static photography when able to in articles
-News stories transition to an overlaid scrollable element with a dimmed background to disregard un-need click thru's
-A more illustrative and interactive weather page

Consistency
-Consistency in design
-Being logical with colour palettes and choices
-Consistent layout, eradicate user confusion
-Using BBC brand colours logically, for example the yellow of BBC Sport

Outlining the problems and possible solutions definitely makes it easier to stay focussed and nail the task on hand, at the moment we're making good conceptual process, the main issue with this brief is usability, addressing current issues and handling all the information, before we even get to the design stage so that's what we're focusing on right now
